CHILLING

CHILLING REFERS TO THE NUMBER OF HOURS, 45 DEGREES F. AND UNDER DURING THE DORMANCY PERIOD.  ALL FRUIT AND NUT TREES NEED A SPECIFIC AMOUNT OF CHILLING HOURS BEFORE THEY WILL PRODUCE FRUIT. THE AMOUNT VARIES WITH EACH VARIETY AND THE HOURS NEED NOT BE CONTINUOUS.  FOR EXAMPLE (150-200 HOURS).

HAWAII HAS SOME AREAS WHERE THE LISTED CHILL HOURS CAN BE ACHIEVED—UP COUNTRY MAUI, UPPER KONA, VOLCANO VILLAGE, WAIMEA/KAMUELA, WAHIAWA/MILILANI AND KOKEE ON KAUAI.  ALTHOUGH 45 DEGREES IS THE MEASUREMENT USED, THIS DOES NOT MEAN THIS IS THE ONLY MEASUREMENT OF DORMANCY.  IF THE FRUIT TREE IS RATED AT 150 HOURS AT 45 DEGREES—THIS DOES NOT MEAN DORMANCY CANNOT BE ACHIEVED AT 55 OR 65 DEGREES—WITH A GREATER NUMBER OF HOURS REQUIRED MAYBE 300 OR SO. OUR RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT THE RATED CHILL TIME IS MORE OF A ROUGH GUIDELINE THAN A STRICT RULE.

WE HAVE HAD FRUITING EXPERIENCES WITH ANNA APPLES IN KANEOHE AND GOLDEN DORSETT IN HAWAII KAI, PEARS IN KAHALUU, AND GRAPES IN KAHALA—THIS IS THROUGH PERSONAL OBSERVATION OR TESTIMONIES FROM OAHU CUSTOMERS.  OUR PEACH TREE IN KAHALUU HAS FLOWERED, BUT SO FAR HAS NOT SET FRUIT AFTER 2 YEARS.

ALSO FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, WE HAVE HAD FRUITING (PEACHES-FLORDAPRINCE AND TROPIC WHITE, ANNA APPLE, HOOD AND FLORDAHOME PEARS) IN WAIMEA ON THE BIG ISLAND WITHIN 3 YEARS OF PLANTING.   FRUITING IN THE UPCOUNTRY AREAS OF THE STATE WITH THE VARIETIES WE OFFER IS A VALUE THAT YOUR CUSTOMER CAN EXPECT.

THE FOLLOWING VARIETIES WE SELECTED TO GROW AND OFFER HAVE THE LOWEST CHILL HOURS (100-300) IN THEIR CATEGORY--- CHILL HOURS CAN RANGE UP TO 900 HOURS.
